Accessibility of schools and harsh economic conditions are major contributors to high illiteracy in rural Africa. Often children take the role of providers for their family because parents are often ill or cannot make ends meet. Roads are unsafe and the nearest schools are miles away. Hence, most children are deprived of the opportunity to get even basic education.
By making a school accessible many children will have a better chance at life. Pamoja’s vision is to build schools in local rural communities that will be staffed and maintained at the local level. We have partnered with Ryerson University’s Department of Architectural Science, Toronto, Canada and Arup, Toronto Office, to build a school in the village of Katebi in the province of Katanga beginning in the summer of 2012.
