Project Katebi is a project initiated by Pamoja to build a medical clinic and an elementary school supporting the three villages of Katebi, Kazembe, and Nzilo in the Katanga province.
Design of clinic and school complex
The Katebi School and Medical Clinic project is the result of a unique collaborative effort between Pamoja, Ryerson University’s Department of Architectural Science, the Toronto office of Arup, one of the world’s foremost engineering and design services firms, and our local partners in Katanga. The design work was completed in the fall of 2012, and the construction is expected to begin in May 2013.
The project employs innovative, appropriate, environmentally sustainable strategies in building materials, methods and technologies. The design and concept is a model, off-the-grid facility, which can be replicated in other areas. It employs solar power to generate light and electricity and to run the project’s autoclave, oven, and disinfection facilities. It collects and stores on site its own clean drinking water, as well as water sufficient to serve the drinking water needs of the villages throughout the dry season. It utilizes hygienic, environmentally-sound, compost latrines. And it is constructed out of indigenous materials – most notably earth, which is harvested from the site itself.
The building of the complex will be supervised by a local architect who will act as the project manager and our local partners in Katanga. The ongoing operations will provide employment for medical, school and maintenance staff.
