Background
In 2005, Mr. Mikhael Missakabo, a native of Katanga and member of Pamoja Tujenge’s board of directors, travelled to Democratic Republic of Congo (Congo) and met with the people of the three villages of Katebi, Kazembe and Nzilo, in south-central Katanga. During that meeting, the villagers identified the lack of access to clean water and to medical facilities as their most pressing concerns. Malaria, water-born intestinal illnesses, and post-natal infections all take a heavy toll on the health of villagers.
Over the years, thanks to Pamoja’s friends’ support from Caritas International, an umbrella organization that unites numerous Catholic aid organizations worldwide, and MYFA, a Katanga based community help organization, we have been able to supply the three villages with needed Anti Malaria Mosquito Nets and Sterile Birthing Kits for expectant mothers as preventative measures against malaria and post natal infections.
In 2008, Pamoja funded the testing of the existing wells in the villages. Three of the five wells were discovered to be contaminated with e-coli. In 2010, Pamoja provided all homes in the three villages with LifeStraw® water filtration units.
The next step is the implementation of a health clinic with the multi-use building that currently houses a school and agricultural center.
