​The People of DRCongo Shed Light on the “Heart of Darkness” as Our
Media Looks the Other Way

Keeping up with world events, important as it is, can nonetheless be fraught. Any
Canadian who wishes to stay informed has seen the coverage: autocratic governments
flexing their muscles, personality cults rather than responsible governments and the
rule of law being threatened even in well-established democracies. The internal rot of
misguided populism and hyper partisanship, challenging as they are, are only the first
steps along a very rocky road.
Despite what we see and hear, the news is not all bad. There is a place, little
noticed and even less understood by most Canadians, where democracy is growing
stronger despite a history of violence and exploitation.
